You’ve been searching and overwhelmed with where to start swapping items in your kitchen as a lower-toxic or even non-toxic options. Maybe you even want to find more sustainable options.
You’ve come to the right place!
This post is a little lengthy, so I’ve included pictures and direct links to products so that the search is easier on you.
In 2023 I set out to swap out just one item a week in my home (sometimes I did more because they were small swaps). I did the research and chose based on my family’s needs and expenses. Come to find out, it’s not as expensive as I thought! Plus, we’ve been married for 10 years, so it was TIME to switch some of these items out anyway!

So lets dive in:
Probably the most expensive items you will swap out are your pots and pans. Unfortunately those nonstick pieces are filled with teflon, which is linked to cancer and hormonal disruptions. When looking for the right pots and pans, you want to look for something that does not contain any type of PFA or PFOA. These are the chemicals in teflon products that leak into your food.
The best are stainless steel, cast iron, Our Place, and Caraway pots and pans and bakeware.

Next up are the cooking and serving utensils. You want to avoid plastic due to the nature of them melting at high temps and also leaking chemicals like BPA, PTFE, and Phthalates that will get into your food and cause hormone, nerve, and immunity imbalances over time.
Our go-to’s are currently silicone, as they are super easy to clean. Two other options can be wood or stainless steel (just make sure the quality of the steel isn’t cheap or mixed with nickel which is a carcinogen and will harm your lungs. Wood is more time consuming to clean and I can never remember to boil a pot of water and stick my spoons in. I love them, but my go-to for busy mom life is the silicone.

Next it’s time to ditch all that leftover Tupperware and those plastic containers. You don’t need that cabinet mess and stress finding the right lids anymore anyway! Plus, it’s full of Phthalates that cause all sorts of havoc on your body and you’re at greater risk when you cook your food in the plastic container and the chemicals leak right into your food. The longer your food sits in the plastic, the more toxic chemicals the food is absorbing. BLECK!
Get yourself a set or 2 of some glass containers with locking lids so that you can keep your food safe from plastics and feel better about warming up the food in that container.
To replace the plastic ziplocks and to be a bit less wasteful, grab some silicone Stashers in all sizes and beeswax wraps for lunches and snacks on the go.

While we are on the subject of food storage, and this may also me the professional luxury home organizer in me BUT decant your food so that it doesn’t sit in plastic longer than it needs to. Plus, with a little labeling, it makes your pantry look absolutely gorgeous! These are the prettiest!

Kids dishes were the hardest to find but also had the least amount of options. With 4 kids and the youngest being a toddler, we don’t really use to-go cups anymore BUT our friends gifted these to our toddler and we absolutely loved them! Silicone snack cups, stainless steel sippy cups, and these are our go-to dishes for our kids ages 2-9. We have not purchased , but have heard from friends that these stainless steel plates are awesome as well!

The not-so-fun part of the kitchen is the clean-up and finding products that will get the job done without you having to rewash. This was a lot of trial and error and here’s what came out on top: everyday dishwashing soap (really EVERYTHING from this company is AMAZING and clean!), the best dishwasher pods (and again, LOVE everything from this brand!), and our favorite eco-friendly sustainable way to wash dishes. And can’t forget about reusable paper towels!

As you can see, there are quite a bit of swaps that you could be making just in the kitchen alone to help lower the toxin load on your body and in your home!
Which one do you think you’ll switch first?
